Grinding wheels:

If the grinding wheel has a cantilever support, 1-plane balancing is mostly sufficient.

If the grinding wheel has a support on both sides (e.g. centre-less grinding), it can be balanced in 2-plane too.

The following is recommended:

  • Balancing at production machines in serial production, then:
    automatic system type AB/ESB/ISB
  • No space for an automatic system, then:
    mobile balancing electronics type BMT
  • For sporadic balancing, then:
    mobile balancing electronics type BMT

Why must be balanced?

Homogeneity, centricity and parallelism of grinding wheels made of bonded abrasives are subject to particular production tolerances. The vibrations caused by this acceptable unbalance (acc. to DIN69106) lead to insufficient grinding results and must be compensated.

How to balance?

The weights inside the balancer (M1, M2) are moved by push button, resp. automatic balancing. By that the balancing mass can be changed in value and position.

The balanced condition leads to a minimized spindle vibration which is measured by a vibration sensor and displayed in the control unit.

The balancer is mounted with 3 (resp. 4 socket head

Please note
  • The vibration sensor resp. sensors should be always installed at the head stock in in-feed / removal direction nearby the grinding wheel resp. the nearest bearing.
  • That means: at flat grinding machines in vertical direction and at round grinding machines in horizontal direction.

The speed can be measured via the speed sensor (optical, inductive of mainly magnetic) in axial or radial direction.

In automatic balancing systems the speed sensors are integrated in the power transmitting part (e.g. collector or CONLESS).
